WATERMARKING
WHAT IS A WATERMARK?
A watermark is a delicate, subtle image permanently embedded into paper during the manufacturing process. It serves as a mark of authenticity, quality, and distinction, often featuring a brand logo or trademark. Watermarks are particularly common in lightweight rolling papers, adding a layer of prestige and making counterfeiting far more challenging.
Contrary to popular myths, watermarks do not affect the burn rate or evenness of the paper burn. Instead, they represent craftsmanship, quality, and abrand’s commitment to standing out in the marketplace.
HOW ARE WATERMARKS MADE?
Watermarks are created by impressing an embossed roller onto the paper during the production process. There are two primary methods of watermarking :
1. Online Watermarking
> Done during the paper manufacturing process, this method produces superior results but comes with significant costs.
> Setup expenses, including the watermark roller and initial paper order, can exceed $100,000, making it impractical for smaller brands.
> This process is suited for high-volume production and premium branding needs.
2. Offline Watermarking
> A more cost-effective solution, this process embosses the watermark onto the paper after it has been manufactured.
> This is the preferred option for brands seeking a customized watermark without the exorbitant setup costs of online watermarking.
To see a watermark, simply hold the paper up to the light—it will appear as a delicate pattern formed by variations in paper density.
